Brutal Protest in Madrid City Centre Battle
August 05, 2011 — MADRID (AP) — Spanish authorities say seven officers were injured when riot police moved in to stop a group of protesters from holding a demonstration outside the Interior Ministry that oversees public safety.
Television images showed images of officers hitting protesters batons late Thursday, bloodying some of them. A national police spokeswoman declined comment Friday on how many protesters were hurt, but said four were detained during the disorder. She spoke on condition of anonymity because of department policy.
Protesters have been demonstrating for four days, angry that police are preventing them from re-erecting a protest camp in Madrid’s central Sol plaza where they have held protests since May.
