At Wellington House Idiomas Barcelona, we love to teach you about English speaking culture as well as English language. Today we will look at “Mother’s Day” and see how you can enjoy this wonderful day with your Mother and family.
What is Mother’s Day?
Mother’s day is a day of celebration and a day to thank our mothers for all that they do for us. Sometimes we refer to “Mother’s Day” as “Mothering Sunday”.
When is Mother’s Day?
In Britain, Mother’s day falls on the 4th Sunday of lent. This year (2012), Mother’s day will be celebrated on March 18th. Next year (2013), Mother’s day will be celebrated on March 10th.
How to Celebrate Mother’s Day
Mother’s day is all about honouring our Mother’s and saying thank you for what they have done for us. The best way to say thank you is to do as much as possible to give your Mother a fantastic day.
I normally start the day off by making my mum breakfast and buying her some fresh flowers for her house. I always make sure to buy her her favourite yellow sun flowers and I also clean the house for her. You can do whatever you think will make you mother happy!
Children often make cards in school, which say “Happy Mother’s Day” and there is nothing stopping you as you get older!
The Origins of Mother’s Day
“Most historians believe that it originated from the 16th century Christian practice of visiting one’s mother church annually on Laetere Sunday, which meant that most mothers would be reunited with their children on this day when young apprentices and young women in service were released by their masters that weekend.”
