Common Mistake = Pass the time with my friends
Correct = I will spend some time with my friends
Many Spanish speakers make the mistake of saying that they will “pass time” – be careful! In English this means that you are “wasting time” and not really happy to do it. It’s best to say that you will “spend time” with your friends and family.
e.g. I’m happy because I am going to spend some time with my son.
e.g. I was bored so I passed some time with John, he’s boring though!
Common Mistake = Part of time job
Correct = Part-time job
Be careful! In English we don’t say ‘part of time job’, we say ‘part-time job’ or ‘full-time’ job. We use the (-) hyphen before ‘time’ because ‘part-time’ and ‘full-time’ are adjectives that describe the job.
e.g. I like having a part-time job because it means I have more free-time to go to the beach when the sun is shining.
e.g. I need a full-time job. My part-time job doesn’t pay me enough money.
