What does it mean to be “well-read”?

The official explanation suggests that a person who has read many books, on many different subjects, can be described as being well-read.

A well-read person is often able to intelligently contribute to any conversation and be knowledgeable about a broad range of subjects.

Princeton’s university defines it as being “well informed or deeply versed through reading.”
