If there is somebody in your family that is different to everybody else, then you can call them the black sheep of the family.

e.g. Juan is always in trouble with the police, I don’t know why he is so different. We call him the black sheep of the family. 

It Runs in the Family

If something runs in the family it means that it is a common theme or characteristic shared by all family members.

e.g. John is very tall, but everybody in his family is tall. It runs in the family.

Flesh and Blood

If somebody is your flesh and blood, it means that they are family.

e.g. Juan is always in trouble but I have to look after him because he is my flesh and blood.

A Chip off the Old Block

If you are chip off the old block, it means that you are very similar to your  mother or father.

e.g. John loves going to the countryside and sleeping in his tent, and so does his dad. He’s a real chip off the old block!

Something Runs in the Family

If something “runs in the family” it means that many members of the same family have similar abilities or qualities.

e.g. Music runs in Maria’s family. Her father was a famous guitar player in a band and both of he brothers are professional singers.
