Christmas is approaching and we thought it would be fun for you to learn some useful Christmas idioms! I hope you are ready for some festive English!

Christmas Comes But Once a Year

This is a very poetic Christmas idiom and suggests that we should not forget how important Christmas is – it only happens once a year so we should enjoy it! We often use it to reassure ourselves when we have eaten too much food and drank too much.

“It’s OK to eat more cake because Christmas come but once a year!”

We Wish You a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

This is something we sing at Christmas time and has become the standard sentiment to write in Christmas cards. Next time you are writing your friend a card and think What should I write in a Christmas card?, write this!

Wish Upon A Star

At Christmas we often “Wish Upon A Star” and hope that the next year, will be a good year!

Kiss Under The Mistletoe

If you are lucky enough to kiss somebody under the mistletoe, you will be happy and in love for the rest of the year! Make sure you kiss the right person when you kiss under the mistletoe

Pull Christmas Crackers

Christmas dinner is all about family being together and having fun. In Britain, we “pull Christmas crackers” which have small gifts inside and funny jokes! Traditionally, though, the jokes are normally very bad!

Leave Food Out For Santa

Santa Clause come down the chimney of everybody’s house on Christmas eve. Christmas eve is the night before Christmas day. My family always leave out food for Santa and his reindeer!

Sing Christmas Carols and Go Carol Singing

A “carol” is what we call a song which you sing at Christmas time. They are often very old and traditional songs that you learn in school when you are a child. Some people go singing in the streets with their friends. Making people feel happy and festive. This is called “carol singing”.
